Biography

I have been making photos since late 2019, when a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease ended my music career. Photography offered a wonderful medium to harness my creative energy. I take inspiration from many photographers, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Art Kane, Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry, Lynsey Addario, Dina Litovsky, Ansel Adams and others found on social media too numerous to list.

I seek moments that often get missed in the flurry of daily life: quirky, emotional, intimate. I favor images that reveal something about the human condition, whether it’s urban street photography or portraits. But even absent people, I’m just as interested in an environmental still life that illuminates something about where and how we live. I also enjoy shooting abstracts and images of musicians in performance (owing to my previous 30-year-career in the business).

Sandwiched between my 30 years playing music, I spent 15 years in newspaper journalism (1993-2008), including eight years at the Ventura County Star. I am the co-author with Joe La Barbera of “Times Remembered: The Final Years of the Bill Evans Trio.” (University of North Texas Press, 2021).

My work has been featured in juried exhibits by the South Manchester Camera Club (England), Chateau Gallery (Louisville, KY), Decode Gallery (Tucson, AZ), Ojai Art Center (Ojai, CA) and Black Box Gallery (Portland, OR). My exhibit, Tireless City, a look at New York City's unstoppable dynamism, was shown in 2024 at St. Peter's Church (NYC) and Ventura College, (Ventura CA). In a 2025 group show, On The Street, I explored the characters who seek refuge on a corner in New York City’s storied SoHo neighborhood. My images of the Los Angeles River, shot for @lariverx on Instagram, are in the permanent collection of the Western Water Archives of the Claremont Colleges Digital Library. Since 2023, several of my photos have consistently earned ribbons at the annual Ventura County Fair. I belong to the Park West Camera Club and split my life between Ventura, California, and New York City, N.Y. with my wife, Jeni Breen.
